These two plants look the same. And that’s the point.

Calibrachoa (Pink Kabloom) Evofactor Trial – AISD Research Greenhouse, January 2021

Bigger. Better. More. The drum beat of characteristics scientists try to make come to life in a new product plays on and on. Afterall, that’s what drives many of us—the quest for something greater than what exists today. Those expectations kept a Cheshire cat grin on my face many a time over the product development cycle for Evofactor, a new nutrient adjuvant from my team at Verano365.

In third party trials and testing, I found myself biting my tongue when researchers would say, “Man, Dave, I don’t think this stuff is doing anything. I don’t see a difference.” I would sigh. Nod my head. Say thanks.

On the inside, I was giddy. Energized. Basically, flat out stoked.

What I was hearing was that the control plants, treated with normal ppm rates of fertilizer, were visually the same as the plants receiving our latest product experiment—which was a combination of reduced rates of fertilizer and our Evofactor nutrient adjuvant. In the lab equivalent of a limbo contest, we were testing various rate reductions to see how low we could go—ranging from 20%-75% less fertilizer than you would typically use. We wanted to see how significantly we could reduce applied nutrients without causing negative impacts to plant health growth and development. My poker face got a workout every time I heard a researcher tell me: The. Plants. Look. The. Same.

For anyone who has spent time in agriculture, you know that plant nutrition is not the typical place to scrimp. My money is always on the grower who is feeding their plants what they need and has a solid nutritional plan. But, it’s also no secret that it’s a really expensive part of the operation. One of the hallmarks of innovation is to think about what the unlikely pair would be—what are two things that seem like they shouldn’t go together? Like, what if a grower could reduce fertilizer inputs AND grow healthy, robust plants?

Proving out the unconventional hypothesis has been rewarding. Time and again, I see that Evofactor can reduce rates of fertilizer up to 50% depending on the crop type and the nutrition needed. Fertilizer efficiency is much talked about and sought after as we consider how to produce food more responsibly for a growing population. As a guy with five grandkids, this is a big deal for me—I’m helping to leave the world a better place than I found it. All because we fused together two opposing ideas with a breakthrough technology.

For all of those who helped us with product testing along the way: Yes, I am very happy the plants look the same. That was the point.
